Batteries for the ACT
The ACT will receive three community batteries as part of a Labor election commitment, storing affordable solar power for households. The batteries will also enable 3,000 homes to swap surplus energy to others in their neighbourhoods.
Batteries including rechargeable and those in power tools should never be thrown away in household recycling bins. Australia’s national product stewardship scheme, B-cycle, provides free battery recycling locations around the country.
Batteries for Caravans
Caravans use large electrical appliances and need a battery capable of powering them. Lithium batteries are a good choice for caravans because they last longer, recharge quicker and are lighter than lead-acid batteries.
Carvan manufacturers are increasingly fitting’maintenance free’ or’sealed for life’ lithium batteries. These have cells that don’t need to be topped up with water, but rather the liquid electrolyte is absorbed in a glass fibre or silica gel.
Ensure that the battery you select has a capacity of at least 100 amp hours (Ah). If weight and space is an issue consider connecting batteries in parallel to increase the overall capacity.
Batteries for Camping
Whether you’re swagging it in the back of your ute or sleeping under the stars in a caravan or camper trailer, a robust battery will see you through all your camping adventures. Look for deep-cycle leisure batteries with higher cyclic durability than lead acid or lithium options.
For serious campers or for those who need a bit more power than just a phone or laptop, lithium is a premium option. They offer increased safety and a longer lifespan in a lighter, faster-charging package. They also come with built-in monitoring systems for peace of mind.
Batteries for Camper Trailers
In most travel trailers, the batteries are located toward the front of the camper within one of the battery compartments. The battery itself consists of negative and positive electrodes (cathode and anode) dipped in electrolyte. When the battery is charged, it converts chemical energy into electrical energy that powers appliances and other devices on the rig.
Flooded lead-acid batteries are the traditional choice for camper trailers. They require maintenance, including topping up the electrolyte with distilled water and cleaning the terminals from time to time. They are also heavy, making them an impractical option for those with limited cargo-carrying space.

When selecting the correct battery for your RV, consider your energy needs and the physical dimensions of your RV’s battery compartment or box. Make sure your new battery fits and is secure, avoiding excessive vibration.
AGM and Lithium batteries are virtually maintenance-free, but flooded lead-acid batteries still need water top-ups and regular checking for corrosion on the terminals.
Large-scale batteries can store electricity generated by solar panels and help reduce energy demand during peak times, like in the ACT. This is an important part of the Big Canberra Battery project.

Tucked away in dank, inconspicuous compartments marine batteries quietly go about their business – powering your engine, dashboard and electronics package while you’re sailing, fishing or cruising. Marine batteries are available in different sizes to suit the power requirements of specific boat setups and battery compartments.
Regardless of the size or type of battery, regular charging is vital to maintain its performance and longevity. Remember, always dispose of batteries correctly – never put them in household rubbish bins, instead use Canberra’s product stewardship scheme B-cycle or visit a participating store for free battery recycling.
